Ostomy Bag
Do you know…

Approximately 100,000 ostomy surgeries are performed in the United States each year.

Ostomy bags are odor-less, and thus people never notice the presence of pouch in the patients.

People with ostomies are capable of doing their daily activities, consisting of swimming, working, playing sports, and having relationships with their family members and friends.

Ostomy surgery is mainly performed to save lives where an opening called stoma is created on the skin to exit urine or stool. The stoma in fact is a way from an organ (such as the large intestine, small intestine, or bladder) to the outside of the abdomen.

Types of ostomy surgeries

Ostomy surgeries are carried out in three different models:

An ostomy could be required because of some medical conditions, including cancer, birth defects, inflammatory bowel disease, incontinence, and diverticulitis. In cases of extreme abdominal or pelvic trauma caused by accidents or sustained injuries during military service, ostomy surgery is also necessary.

Ostomy bag (also known as “pouch”) is one of the medical devices employed during ostomy surgeries. It is situated outside the patient body on the abdomen whose main role is to collect bodily waste such as urine or stool.

Ostomy bag types

Various types of pouch are available, which include:

1

One-Piece Ostomy Bags

They are a singular unit, and composed of a conjoined bag and skin barrier (or wafer). Because of that, the system must be entirely replaced whenever the ostomy bag is changed. Usage of ostomy accessories such as skin barrier pastes and adhesive removers are advantageous for reducing the pain and skin irritation caused during change of the pouch. Compared to two-piece ostomy bags, the one-piece ones provide individuals with a discreet profile, which makes them suitable for those who have active lifestyles (such as those who play sports).

Two-Piece Ostomy Bags

Two-piece ostomy bags are made up of two discrete components, the bag and the skin barrier. Unlike one-piece pouches, the bag in two-piece ostomy bags can be changed without need to replace the wafer. The skin barrier remains in place for 3 to 5 days. This ostomy bag is applicable for those looking for the ability to simply move to accommodate their activities or time of day (for instance when they sleep or have sexual activity.

Drainable and Closed-End Pouches

Both drainable and closed-end ostomy bags are available in one-piece and two-piece models.

Drainable pouches allow the users to discharge the contents of the bag and reuse them. They are suitable for those who have had ileostomy surgery. Their bodily waste is usually liquid or semi-formed, which facilitates their discharge.

Closed-end pouches are not reusable and are ideal for collecting the solid waste. Since these ostomy bags cannot be washed or cleaned, they must be disposed of and replaced when they are full. Specific types of closed-end pouches are available which contain a liner, making them suited for fast and easy disposal. They can be adopted for those who have active lifestyles or spend lots of time in public.

Pre-Cut and Cut-to-Fit Ostomy Bags

Stoma comes in various shapes and sizes and is the only parameter for choosing the ostomy bags. Some people may have a stoma with a uniformly round shape, for which pre-cut ostomy bags are an ideal choice.

Cut-to-fit pouches are designed with the needs of individuals. In some cases, the size or shape of the stoma may vary after the ostomy, or the stoma may not have a uniformly round shape. In these circumstances, cut-to-fit ostomy bags are a suitable option. They typically possess a small starter hole in the center, which are useful to cut out an appropriate shape with scissors.

When you are changing an ostomy bag, it is necessary to pay attention to some points, the most important of which are mentioned below:

How to change the ostomy bag

Changing the ostomy bag involves removing the old bag, checking the skin, measuring the stoma, and attaching the new bag. Each stage includes several steps, which are given below:

Hygiene Tips

One of the most principal steps of changing an ostomy bag is to consider hygiene tips, which will help prevent infection.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water. Be careful you have completely cleaned between the fingers and under the nails. Dry your hands with a clean towel or paper towel.
  • If you use a two-piece ostomy bag, gently press the skin around your stoma with one hand and remove the seal with the other hand (If it is hard to remove the seal, you can use special pads). This can prevent the contact of the head of the ostomy bag with the skin, which subsequently inhibits the infection.

Removing the Old Bag

Hold the clip available in the bag. Place the old ostomy bag in another bag and then throw it in the trash. Afterwards, wash the skin around your stoma with warm water and soap and then clean it with a tissue or paper towel. Finally, dry the skin using a clean towel.

Checking the Skin

  • Check your skin. Light bleeding is normal. The skin should be pink or red. If it is purple, black, or blue, call your doctor.
  • Wipe the area around the stoma with a special skin tissue. If your skin is slightly damp, sprinkle some stoma powder only on the wet or open area.
  • Gently apply the special wet wipe on the powder and again on your skin.
  • Allow this area to be dried in air for 1 to 2 minutes.

Measuring the Stoma

  • Use your measurement card to find out the size of the circle matched your stoma. Do not touch the card to your skin.
  • If you use a two-piece ostomy bag, draw the size of the circle on the back of the loop seal and cut it. Make sure the cut edges are smooth.

Attaching the New Bag

  • If you use a two-piece ostomy bag, attach the bag to the ring seal.
  • Remove the paper from the ring seal.
  • Apply stoma paste around the hole or place a stoma ring around the opening.
  • Place the seal evenly around the stoma. Keep it in place for a few minutes. Try holding a warm cloth over the seal to help it stick into your skin.
  • If needed, put cotton balls or special gel packs in their own bags to inhibit leakage.
  • Attach the bag clip or use tape to close the bag.
  • Wash your hands again with warm soap and water.

How to discharge the ostomy bag

In order to empty the ostomy bag, it is necessary to perform the following steps:

Sit on or next to the toilet, or stand in front of it. Place a layer of toilet paper in the toilet bowl to prevent stool from splashing.

Remove your clothes from the bag.

Keep the bottom of the bag upward. Open the Velcro closures or remove the clip.

Gently open the tail or its opening on the toilet.

Lean over the toilet to avoid splashing.

Slide your fingers down the bag to remove the stool wholly.

How to clean the ostomy bag

In order to clean the ostomy bag, you can do the following actions:

Wipe the inside and outside of the tail with a toilet paper. It can prevent any odors.

Check both sides of the bag in terms of tears or holes. If you find any of them, insert a new bag.

If the bag closes with a clip, wash the clip if you observe stool on it.
