hydrogel dressing
Hydrogel dressings are one of the most important types of advanced dressings, which have become an ideal alternative to conventional dressings. This type of dressing is advantageous for a wide of range of wounds varying from dry to mildly exudating wounds. In addition, it can be used for degradation of slough on the surface of the wound. Hydrogel dressings are made up of hydrophyllic polymers with a high amount of water (90%). They are available in various types, including hydrogel sheets, amorphous hydrogels, and impregnated hydrogels.
Hydrogel dressings provide a warm and moist environment for the wounds, which allows the painless debridement of the infected and necrotic tissues, raises granulation, and accelerates the healing process of the wounds. Owing to low content of water in the dressings, they are not fully absorbent, which makes them appropriate for the wounds with light to moderate exudate. Another merit of hydrogel dressings is cooling the wounds, which alleviates the pain. They possess non-adherent property and do not irritate or react with the tissue.
