Hydrocolloid dressing
Hydrocolloid dressings are a special type of wound dressing, which are advantageous for healing of mildly exuding wounds. This dressing is composed of two layers. The inner one is hydrophilic and contains hydrocolloid particles, including pectin, gelatin, and arboxymethylcellulose (CMC). This layer facilitates the wound healing through absorption of the exudates and providing a moist environment. The outer layer is waterproof and made from film or polyurethane foam. The main role of this layer is to protect the wound from foreign agents such as bacteria and debris.
Hydrocolloid dressings are produced in various forms, including powder, paste, gel, sheet or wafer. They possess some properties, one of the most important of which is to provide a moist environment for wound healing and act as a barrier against bacteria. Moreover, these dressings are able to stay on wound place for up to a week and hence, they do not generally need to be changed as often as other types of dressings. They are easy to use and do not cause any side effect such as skin irritation for the users. Hydrocolloid dressings are easily to be removed, and do not bring about any pain for the person or leave any residue on place.
